The Essential Nutrient for Strong Bones, Muscles, and Overall Health

A hand holds a translucent vitamin D capsule up to the sunlight, with the sun shining through the soft gel against a backdrop of a bright blue sky and scattered clouds.

Vitamin D is a powerhouse nutrient that supports bone strength, muscle function, and immune health. Known as the “sunshine vitamin,” your body produces it naturally when exposed to sunlight. But with modern lifestyles keeping many people indoors, vitamin D deficiencies are becoming more common, impacting not just general health but also joint and spinal wellness.

At HealthSource Chiropractic, we focus on whole-body wellness, and that includes ensuring your bones, muscles, and joints have the support they need to function properly. Let’s explore why vitamin D is essential and how it plays a role in chiropractic health.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, two critical minerals for maintaining strong bones and preventing fractures. But it also plays a key role in muscle strength, balance, and reducing inflammation, factors that directly affect spinal health and mobility.

Here’s how vitamin D supports chiropractic care and musculoskeletal health:

Better Muscle Function – Vitamin D supports muscle strength and coordination, helping to prevent injuries and improve movement patterns.

Reduced Inflammation – Chronic inflammation contributes to joint pain and stiffness, and vitamin D has been shown to help regulate inflammatory responses.

Improved Recovery – If you’re receiving chiropractic adjustments, proper vitamin D levels can enhance your body’s ability to heal and recover.

Four women wearing sunglasses and swimsuits are smiling and laughing while lounging by the edge of a swimming pool. They are enjoying a sunny day, leaning on the pool deck, and engaging in conversation.

Ensuring your body has adequate vitamin D is crucial for overall wellness and spinal health. Here are three key ways to maintain healthy levels:

  1. Sunlight Exposure – Spend 10–30 minutes outside a few times a week, letting your skin absorb natural sunlight. This helps your body produce vitamin D naturally.
  2. Dietary Sources – Eat vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), egg yolks, and fortified dairy products.
  3. Supplementation – If you have limited sun exposure or a deficiency, vitamin D supplements can help maintain proper levels. Your chiropractor or healthcare provider can help determine the right amount for you.

Vitamin D deficiency can manifest in many ways, often affecting musculoskeletal health. Common symptoms include:

  • Muscle weakness or cramps
  • Joint pain or stiffness
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Increased risk of fractures
  • Slow recovery from injuries

If you experience any of these symptoms, it may be worth discussing your vitamin D levels with a healthcare provider.

The recommended daily intake varies based on age, lifestyle, and health conditions:

  • Adults (19–70 years): 600 IU per day
  • Adults over 70: 800 IU per day
  • Individuals with musculoskeletal concerns or low sun exposure may require higher doses

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that supports bone strength, muscle function, and overall wellness—making it a key factor in chiropractic health. Whether through sunlight, diet, or supplements, maintaining adequate levels can help keep your spine, joints, and muscles functioning at their best.

At HealthSource Chiropractic, we’re committed to helping you feel better, move better, and live your best life. If you’re looking for more ways to support your musculoskeletal health, schedule a consultation with HealthSource today!

One of the biggest buzzwords today is the term ‘inflammation,’ thrown around as often as a pickleball in a Florida retirement community. What exactly is inflammation? It’s your body’s natural response to a stimulus perceived as potentially harmful. Learn more as we review the causes of inflammation and introduce you to an effective solution.

Many factors can trigger inflammation, including poor food choices, injuries, stress, lack of sleep, poor sleep quality, excessive or insufficient exercise, too much sun exposure, and prolonged sitting. Avoiding every cause of inflammation is nearly impossible.

The five main signs of inflammation are redness, swelling, pain, heat, and loss of function. It’s rare to find an adult without at least one of these signs. Ultimately, any diagnosis ending in “itis” is a type of inflammation. It’s everywhere. So, what can you do to reduce inflammation and improve your health?

A woman smiling as she holds a supplement capsule near her mouth, preparing to take it.

There are many ways to reduce inflammation in the body, but one of the simplest and most effective is taking a high-quality proteolytic enzyme. If you Google proteolytic enzymes, you’ll find tons of information, which can be confusing and contradictory. Nevertheless, one enzyme really stands out: Serrapeptase.

In many European countries and Japan, Serrapeptase is to go-to pain reliever and anti-inflammatory enzyme of choice.

Numerous research-based sources highlight its main benefits:

  • Helps treat inflammation and pain
  • Kills bacteria and promotes wound healing
  • Treats respiratory infections by reducing mucus
  • Fights autoimmune diseases
  • Lowers the risk for atherosclerosis
  • May help treat neurological disorders
  • Treats bone and joint pain

Serrapeptase is the most effective proteolytic enzyme for controlling the body’s inflammation response. It’s easy to take—just swallow a small capsule on an empty stomach, and it quickly begins working to reduce inflammation. For even better results, add two more proteolytic enzymes, bromelain, and papain, to create a powerful combination against inflammation.

At HealthSource, we created the perfect product that combines all three enzymes—Proteo Ultra. This powerful formula delivers incredible results. If you’re dealing with inflammation, adding serrapeptase, bromelain, and papain to your morning and evening routine could make a significant difference. Proteo Ultra makes it easy and convenient to get all three enzymes in one powerful supplement. Make it part of your daily and experience whole-body benefits of reduced inflammation – you’ll be glad you did!

In our fast-paced lives, work, family responsibilities, and daily demands often push sleep to the backseat. Yet, getting enough rest plays a crucial role in overall health and wellness. Quality sleep does more than leave you feeling rested, it actively supports the body’s natural healing processes and promotes optimal function.

Sleep isn’t just downtime; it’s a vital period when the body repairs tissues, consolidates memories, and regulates hormones. Poor sleep hygiene disrupts these processes, increasing the risk of various health issues.

Physical Restoration: During sleep, your body repairs muscles and joints, crucial for maintaining mobility and reducing pain. Poor sleep can exacerbate conditions like back pain or neck stiffness.

Immune Function: Sleep plays a vital role in immune function, helping your body fight off infections and diseases. Chronic sleep deprivation may weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses.

Mental Wellbeing: Sleep is essential for mental health, influencing mood, cognitive function, and emotional resilience. Lack of sleep can contribute to irritability, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating.

Improving your sleep quality involves adopting healthy sleep habits and creating a conducive sleep environment.

Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends, to regulate your body’s internal clock.

Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Consider using blackout curtains, white noise machines, or aromatherapy to promote relaxation.

Avoid electronic devices before bed, as the blue light emitted can interfere with your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows that support your body’s natural alignment.

Your body may be missing essential amino acids that are preventing your body’s ability to relax, rest and enjoy a quality night’s sleep.

Using sleep aids, such as ergonomic pillows and mattresses, can significantly improve sleep quality by providing optimal support and alignment for the body, reducing discomfort and enhancing restorative rest.

Wearing a sleep tracking device, such as a smart watch, can help you track overnight sleep quality, interruptions and phases of sleep helping you understand how tactics are increasing your sleep quality.

Quality sleep is undoubtedly foundational to your overall health and well-being. By consistently prioritizing rest and adopting healthy sleep habits, you’re investing in your body’s ability to heal, function optimally, and thrive. Whether you’re seeking relief from pain or aiming to enhance your overall wellness, HealthSource Chiropractic is here to support your journey to better sleep and a healthier life.

Take the first step toward better sleep and schedule an appointment today at a local HealthSource clinic near you.

Do I Have a Herniated Disc?   https://www.healthsourcechiro.com/blog/do-i-have-a-herniated-disc/ Thu, 13 Feb 2025 21:56:50 +0000 https://www.healthsourcechiro.com/?p=3536 Understanding Herniated Disc Symptoms, Causes and Prevention Strategies

The post Do I Have a Herniated Disc?   appeared first on HealthSource Chiropractic.

A person holding their lower back in discomfort, with a red glowing area highlighting the source of pain.

Waking up to an unfamiliar back pain raises the question: Do I have a herniated disc? Recognizing the symptoms of a herniated disc is crucial for early detection, but equally important is understanding the common causes behind this condition. Let’s explore the signs of disc herniation problems and potential causes that might be contributing to your discomfort.

While a herniated disc can cause back pain and referred pain (nearby areas of pain), these five symptoms may mean you are experiencing disc or herniation problems in your back and should not be ignored.

  • Lower spine-related pain may radiate over the buttocks, down one thigh, and into the calf.
  • Upper spine-related pain may radiate through the shoulder and arm.
  • Patients with a herniated disc often experience numbness or tingling in the area served by the affected nerves.
  • Pain may intensify with movements like sneezing, coughing or sitting. In severe cases, finding comfort, even lying down, becomes challenging.
  • Inability to fully straighten your neck or back may indicate disc problems.
  • Muscles connected to the affected nerves may weaken, leading to difficulty lifting or holding items, or result in issues with balance and coordination.

Understanding the root causes can provide valuable insights into preventing and managing herniated discs. Common causes of herniated discs include:

Age-related Wear and Tear: The natural aging process can lead to disc degeneration, making them more susceptible to herniation.

Injury or Trauma: Sudden forceful movements or accidents can cause discs to herniate.

Poor Lifting Techniques: Incorrect lifting, especially with a rounded back, puts excessive pressure on the spine.

Genetics: Some individuals may be predisposed to herniated discs due to genetic factors.

Excess Weight: Being overweight puts additional stress on the spine, increasing the risk of disc issues.

Reduce your risk of a herniated disc with these prevention strategies:

  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Maintain good posture
  • Spinal Decompression
  • Keep a healthy weight
  • Regular exercise
  • Strengthen your back and core with recommended exercises
  • Take breaks every 20-25 minutes if you sit for extended period

Early intervention and understanding the contributing factors can significantly impact the management of herniated discs. Take proactive steps toward spinal health and seek the right guidance for a healthier, more comfortable life. If you recognize these symptoms or are suffering from spine-related pain, consider the potential causes and consult with a HealthSource Chiropractor near you.

A close-up of a middle-aged woman's face, focusing on her brown eye and the surrounding skin. She has a warm expression with slight wrinkles around her eye. The background is blurred and neutral-toned.

When you think of Chiropractic Care, you probably picture adjustments for back and spine issues. But did you know that Chiropractic Care can also contribute to promoting and maintaining good eye health? It’s true! Let’s dive into how this holistic approach can support not just your spine, but your eyes too.

The spine is a central hub for nerve communication throughout the body, including the optic nerves connected to our eyes. The intricate network of nerves in the body, including those connected to the eyes, relies on unimpeded communication for optimal function. Misalignments in the spine can disrupt this communication, potentially impacting various functions, including those related to our eyes. Chiropractors focus on identifying and correcting nerve interference caused by spinal misalignments—aiming to restore proper alignment, facilitating unimpeded nerve flow and optimizing the body’s overall function, including eye health.

Many of us spend extended periods in front of screens, leading to increased tension in the neck and shoulders. This tension can create a domino effect, affecting the nerves and blood vessels that supply the eyes. Chiropractic adjustments can release this tension, promoting better blood flow and reducing stress on the eyes, potentially alleviating symptoms like eye strain and headaches.

Proper blood circulation is vital for maintaining healthy eyesight. Chiropractic Care aids in improving blood flow throughout the body, including the eyes. Enhanced circulation ensures that the eyes receive an optimal supply of oxygen and nutrients, contributing to overall eye health and potentially preventing conditions related to poor circulation.

While Chiropractic Care is not a substitute for traditional eye care, it can complement your overall wellness strategy. By fostering spinal health, chiropractors contribute to improved nerve function, reduced tension, and enhanced blood circulation, all of which play a role in supporting optimal eye health. Contact your local HealthSource Chiropractor to discuss how chiropractic adjustments can enhance your overall well-being.

Hidden Symptoms: What Causes Shoulder Pain? https://www.healthsourcechiro.com/blog/hidden-symptoms-what-causes-shoulder-pain/ Thu, 13 Feb 2025 21:21:23 +0000 https://www.healthsourcechiro.com/?p=3538 Uncover the Causes Behind Your Shoulder Pain

The post Hidden Symptoms: What Causes Shoulder Pain? appeared first on HealthSource Chiropractic.

]]>
A person in a park, standing and holding their right shoulder with their left hand while raising their right arm, showing a grimace of pain and discomfort.

Shoulder pain is more than just an annoying ache—it’s a widespread issue affecting millions every year, disrupting daily life and stealing joy from simple pleasures. While many turn to rest, ice, and over-the-counter meds for relief, it’s important to recognize that shoulder pain can signal deeper problems.

Join us as we uncover the hidden symptoms and underlying causes of shoulder pain, helping you find the real solutions you need.

Shoulder pain accompanied by tingling sensations or numbness may indicate nerve impingement. Pinched nerves in the neck or upper back can radiate pain down the arm and into the shoulder. Chiropractic Care focuses on spinal adjustments to relieve pressure on nerves, promoting optimal nerve function and reducing symptoms like tingling and numbness.

Muscle tension and the presence of trigger points can contribute significantly to shoulder pain. These knots in the muscles can cause referred pain, meaning you may feel discomfort in your shoulder even if the issue originated elsewhere. Chiropractors use various techniques, including therapeutic massage and manual therapy, to release tension and address trigger points, promoting relaxation and improved shoulder mobility.

When joints in the shoulder become dysfunctional, they can lead to stiffness and pain. Oftentimes, “frozen shoulder” rotator cuff issues, tendonitis and nerve impingement cast a persistent ache and pain in your shoulder, escalating when you lift or rotate your arm. This discomfort, extending down the arm or under your shoulder blade, disrupts daily tasks and hampers shoulder mobility leading to weakened muscles. Weakened muscles lead to diminished range of motion, affecting simple movements. Whether triggered by overuse, age-related wear, trauma, side sleeping or other posture-related issues, chiropractors specialize in joint manipulation and physical rehabilitation techniques that help to restore proper joint function and increase stability. By improving joint mobility and stability, Chiropractic Care can enhance overall shoulder flexibility and reduce the risk of future injuries.

It’s not uncommon for emotional stress to manifest physically, and the shoulders are a common area where stress is held. Tension and tightness in the shoulders can be a physical expression of emotional strain. Chiropractors take a holistic approach, considering the mind-body connection and incorporating stress management techniques to complement physical adjustments.

Often overlooked, poor posture can be a silent contributor to shoulder pain. Modern lifestyles, characterized by long hours spent in front of screens and sedentary habits, can lead to muscular imbalances and misalignments. These issues, in turn, put undue stress on the shoulder joints and surrounding muscles. Chiropractors are adept at identifying and addressing postural problems, offering tailored solutions to correct imbalances and alleviate shoulder pain at its source.

Shoulder pain is often a complex issue with hidden symptoms that require a comprehensive treatment approach for effective relief. Chiropractic Care offers a holistic and personalized program to address the root causes of shoulder pain, providing not just temporary relief but fostering long-term well-being. If you’re experiencing shoulder pain, consider consulting with a HealthSource chiropractor near you.

A person sleeping in bed, lying on their back under the covers in a dimly lit room, wearing a blue silk sleep mask.

Millennials are increasingly prioritizing sleep quality, using technology and wellness trends to improve their rest. Compared to previous generations, they are more likely to track their sleep patterns and adopt healthier bedtime routines.

A recent survey by Saatva, the Smarter Luxury Sleep Company, found that Millennials sleep longer and better than any other generation. This finding comes from a comprehensive study of 2,000 Americans. The study included participants from Gen Z (1997-2012), Millennials (1981-1996), Gen X (1965-1980), and Boomers (1946-1964). Here is a closer look at how different generations sleep and what keeps them up at night.

Dr. Shantha Gowda, a licensed clinical health psychologist and founder of ThinkSleep, explains, “Younger people tend to report better sleep quality than older people. It’s a common topic that I see in my practice.” She notes that Gen X faces stress from raising children, caring for parents, and managing demanding jobs. In contrast, younger Millennials and Gen Z prioritize work-life balance. This focus helps improve their sleep quality.

Back pain was the top complaint for Gen X and Boomers, while 29% of Millennials and 15% of Gen Z reported it too.

Chiropractor Chris Tomshack, CEO and founder of HealthSource Chiropractic, states, “Back pain does not discriminate. It affects all adults to a significant degree without giving credence to psychographics or demographics. Half of adults experience chronic or daily back pain. Additionally, 80% will encounter a back pain event at some point in life.

Understanding these sleep patterns and challenges can help individuals make informed decisions to improve their rest. For those struggling with back pain, Chiropractic Care and high-quality mattresses like those from Saatva can be game changers. Prioritizing sleep health across all generations is key to a healthier, more balanced life.

HealthSource Chiropractic and Saatva have partnered to enhance sleep quality by combining Chiropractic Care and premium sleep products. Founded in 2010, Saatva leads the direct-to-consumer mattress industry with handcrafted, eco-friendly mattresses made in the USA.Their mattresses, including innerspring, memory foam, latex, hybrid, and adjustable air, are designed to provide optimal spinal support. This partnership leverages HealthSource Chiropractic’s expertise in spinal health and Saatva’s quality mattresses to provide comprehensive solutions for restorative sleep.

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. The total sample size was 2,017 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 8 and 12 April 2024. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all US adults (aged 18+).

Can Cold Weather Cause Headaches? https://www.healthsourcechiro.com/blog/can-cold-weather-cause-headaches/ Thu, 13 Feb 2025 20:42:45 +0000 https://www.healthsourcechiro.com/?p=3938 Can cold weather cause headaches? Exploring the Connection and Finding Relief

The post Can Cold Weather Cause Headaches? appeared first on HealthSource Chiropractic.

]]>

As the chill of winter sets in, many people find themselves battling with the onset of seasonal headaches. One common question that arises during this time is, “Can cold weather cause headaches?”

A man with dark hair and a beard is experiencing a headache, pressing his fingers against his temples with a pained expression. His eyes are closed, and his brow is furrowed. The background is blurred, suggesting an indoor setting with natural light.

Headaches can stem from various sources, and weather-related factors are among them. Research has shown that cold weather can be behind the increased frequency of headaches, where fluctuating air pressures and humidity levels can be a trigger, particularly for migraines, among those who are sensitive to atmospheric changes. Additionally, exposure to allergens present in the cooler air–such from decaying leaves–may find their reactions intensify. And even exposure to cold air itself, may lead to tension in the muscles around the head and neck, which can trigger headaches or migraines in people who are susceptible.

Regardless of the specific cause, there are practical techniques and preventative measures to minimize the impact of cold weather on headaches. While it may be difficult to completely prevent chronic headaches during colder weather, there are strategies that can help manage the symptoms. Here are some tips to consider:

  • Stay warm: Dressing warmly, especially around the neck and head, can help prevent muscle tension induced by exposure to cold air.
  • Stay hydrated: Cold weather can lead to dehydration, which is a known headache and migraine trigger. Stay adequately hydrated to support overall health and reduce the risk of headaches.
  • Stay active: Engaging in regular physical activity helps maintain flexibility and reduces muscle tension, contributing to overall headache prevention.
  • Stay on a healthy sleep schedule: Changes in daylight and temperature can disrupt sleep patterns, increasing the risk of headaches. Stick to a regular sleep schedule to promote quality sleep.
  • Stay stress-free: Stress is a common trigger for chronic headaches. Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga to reduce stress levels.
  • Stay aligned: Headaches often result from issues in closely related body parts, such as the neck, shoulders, or jaw. Through chiropractic adjustments, coupled with therapeutic techniques and massage, relief can be achieved swiftly for headache sufferers – regardless of the season. By addressing the root causes of headaches, chiropractic care can provide long-term relief and improve overall well-being.

Understanding headache triggers requires a holistic approach. Keeping a journal of sleep habits, environmental encounters, and dietary choices can offer valuable insights. By tracking when headaches occur and identifying potential patterns, individuals can pinpoint triggers that may have gone unnoticed. Working closely with a chiropractor can further aid in this process, providing natural treatments without the risk of adverse side effects. A journal is helpful to review when, how often and activities that may have caused your symptoms.

If you are experiencing cold weather headaches or are looking to improve your seasonal wellness, consult with a HealthSource Chiropractor near you.

A chiropractor performs laser therapy on a patient's jaw while they lie on the treatment table. Both the doctor and the patient are wearing laser eye protection glasses.

In the realm of modern healthcare, innovative treatments continue to emerge, offering new avenues for pain relief and healing. Laser Therapy, specifically Class IV Laser Therapy, is one such advancement gaining recognition for its therapeutic benefits. HealthSource Chiropractic explores Laser Therapy, its benefits, and how Class IV Laser Therapy enhances your wellness and recovery.

Laser Therapy uses specific light wavelengths to stimulate natural healing and relieve pain. It is non-invasive and painless, targeting areas of pain or injury to promote cellular regeneration and reduce inflammation.

Lasers are classified into different categories based on their power levels. For example, Class 3 lasers (cold lasers) don’t produce heat, while Class 4 lasers do.

Class IV laser therapy has become the standard treatment for many musculoskeletal injuries. High-powered red and near-infrared light stimulate the body’s processes to reduce pain, swelling, and improve range of motion.

Laser Therapy relieves pain from arthritis, sports injuries, and back pain by reducing inflammation and improving circulation in affected areas.

By boosting cellular metabolism and increasing blood flow, Laser Therapy accelerates tissue repair and regeneration, leading to quicker recovery times from injuries or surgeries.

Unlike surgical procedures or medications, Laser Therapy offers a gentle alternative with minimal side effects, ideal for those seeking natural pain relief options.

Stressed man with a headache sitting alone on the couch at home, holding the side of his head and neck. He has a clear expression of pain and frustration on his face.

Headaches—they’re a universal experience, but not all headaches are created equal. We’re diving into the top three most common types: tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. Each brings its own set of symptoms and triggers, affecting people differently. Let’s unpack what sets them apart and how Chiropractic Care can offer relief. Whether you’re familiar with these headaches or just starting to learn about them, join us as we explore how to manage and alleviate these often-debilitating pains.

Migraines are intense headaches that often come with additional symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances. They can last for hours to days and are typically throbbing or pulsating in nature. Migraines can be debilitating, affecting work, social activities, and overall quality of life.

At HealthSource, our approach to migraine treatment focuses on identifying triggers and addressing underlying issues that may contribute to migraine onset. Chiropractic adjustments, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle changes are all part of our holistic approach to managing migraines and improving overall well-being.

Cluster headaches are excruciatingly painful headaches that occur in clusters or cycles. They often strike suddenly and are characterized by intense pain around one eye or on one side of the head. Cluster headaches can last anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours and may recur multiple times a day during a cluster period, which can last weeks to months.

For those suffering from cluster headaches, our Chiropractic Care focuses on relieving pressure and tension in the neck and spine, which can contribute to headache pain. We work to improve nerve function and reduce inflammation, offering personalized care to help manage and alleviate cluster headache symptoms.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache, often described as a dull, achy sensation around the head or neck. They can result from stress, poor posture, jaw clenching, or muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. Tension headaches are usually mild to moderate in intensity and can last from a few minutes to several days.

Our approach to tension headache treatment involves gentle chiropractic adjustments to correct spinal misalignments and improve posture. We also focus on relaxation techniques, stress management, and ergonomic adjustments to prevent tension headaches from recurring. By addressing the root causes, we aim to provide long-term relief and improve overall spinal health.

At HealthSource Chiropractic, we believe in taking a comprehensive and holistic approach to headache management. Whether you suffer from migraines, cluster headaches, or tension headaches, our goal is to provide personalized care that addresses your unique needs and helps you find relief. Through chiropractic adjustments, lifestyle recommendations, and patient education, we empower our patients to take control of their headache symptoms and live healthier, pain-free lives.
